  1. Dear Mr. Payne:

I’m an emeritus professor at Michigan State University and corresponded with your father, when we were members of the working group on temperate zone fruits in the tropics and subtropics of the International Society for Horticultural Sciences in the 1980s and ’90s. I enjoyed exchanging information with him, although I think he never attended a working group meeting; these were held in a number of countries around the world. I had lost track of him, but checked the internet and found your web pages, in which you noted his death in 2006.

Our church here in E. Lansing, MI conducts a “farmers market” during the summer, and members bring produce from their gardens, for which others donate cash. The money is given to the local food bank and to organizations in other countries. One of the latter is a church in Harare, Zimbabwe, which assists the children of victims of AIDS.

Best regards from Michigan, and best wishes in your work.
